Jean-Marc Burgaud crafts this Morgon with fruit from the prized hillside vineyard Côte du Py, composed of soils containing schist flakes and stones. Fuller medium-bodied with fleshy red and black cherries, baking spice, white flowers, fine tannins, and bright acids. Drinks well with charcuterie, burgers, sausage, stew, game, poultry, and braises.
Beaujolais remains a somewhat misunderstood region made famous by its annual mass release of weeks-old basic Nouveau. These wines range in quality from good to fair and are often one's first encounter with Gamay. However, this legendary area at the southern tip of Burgundy has so much to offer. There's chuggable everyday Beaujolais AOC red, rosé, and occasionally white (Chardonnay) wine. Better yet is Beaujolais-Villages, made among 39 villages in the northern two-thirds of the appellation. The pinnacle of Gamay's expression and terroir is cellar-worthy Beaujolais Cru, whose producers list on the label one of ten villages from north to south: Juliénas, Saint-Amour, Chénas, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Régnié, Côte de Brouilly, and Brouilly. Finally, winemakers can also add lieu-dits (specific parcels) to the single village designation. Once the nuances of Gamay are explored, it's no wonder that wine lovers are as dedicated to Beaujolais as they are to Bordeaux and Burgundy.
