Secateurs is an aromatic blend of Shiraz for spice, young Grenache for grip, and Cinsault for soft fruitiness. All the grapes come from old dry-farmed bush vines that are co-fermented in concrete tanks and aged for seven months in wood and concrete before light filtration. A fantastic alternative to the usual Côtes du Rhône.
Dust off the globe and notice South Africa's position where the Atlantic and Indian oceans converge. Antarctica is 2500 miles to the south, and the next closest vineyards in the southern hemisphere are 5000 miles away along the same latitudes in Argentina, Chile, Australia, and New Zealand. Since the 17th-century French Huguenots arrived, the country's wine industry operated in varying degrees of geographical, cultural, and political isolation. Still, they cultivated a wide range of wines with French, German, and Portuguese (for Cape port-style wines) and developed Pinotage, a cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir. Then, for much of the 20th century, South African wine was controlled by a cooperative that dissolved in 1997, making superb wine available to the rest of the world. AA Badenhorst Family Wines is the fruition of a long winemaking tradition handed down over two generations. Now, cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst are at the helm of Kalmoesfontein Farm, a renovated estate in Paarderberg, Swartland. The wines are traditional, "back to basics" creations with plenty of indigenous character and style.
