Grignolino (green-yoe-leno), a native grape of the Monferrato Hills, whose name means 'many (grape) pips is not as famous as Dolcetto and Barbera, but Piemontese locals drink plenty of this cheerful red while waiting for Barolo and Barbaresco to mature. Grignolino is light in color and body yet heavily aromatic with raspberry, currants, strawberry notes, and a touch of pomegranate. Give it a chill and serve as an aperitif or with pasta, risotto, Asian noodles, herb sauces, and tuna.
