Rieslings from Wachau offer a distinct perspective into the king of white grapes. Whereas the rest of Austria uses Germany's terms for ripeness (i.e., Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese), Wachau producers in western Niederösterreich use terms like Federspiel and Smaragd for sugar & alcohol levels. All this information prepares you for Alzinger's nervy, crystalline, pure dry Riesling from the poor yet sunny soils of Ried Loibenberg (reed loy-ben-berg) terroir. Drier and higher in alcohol than Federspiel-level (11.5–12.5% ABV), this Smaragd is at 13.5% with plenty of structure for long, long aging under cork. Notes of stones, citrus, tropical fruit, and touches of pine. We like this with sushi, dumplings, raw bar, smoked salmon, ham, and caviar.
