Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape in Austria, so there's lots of it, especially in Niederösterreich, where they range from gulping "Heuriger" (tavern) wines to high-end expressions, rivaling the finest Rieslings in price. Most drinkers in America don't usually spend big on Grüner, but Alzinger's Federspiel from Wachau might be the gateway to the next level. From stony, silica, and gneiss vineyards across Dürnstein, this Federspiel-classified wine is at the top end of ABV with 12.5%, so it's nice and dry but with enough fruit like white grapefruit, nectarines, green plum, and a hint of thyme & sage. Great with fish, fresh sausage, schnitzels, potato, and cheese dishes.
