Purchased in 1996 by Bernard Germain, this 11th-century Chateau was the site of some fantastic winemaking. Unfortunately, after several bad vintages and the original owner's death, Roulerie went into a 20-year hibernation before its rebirth under the direction of Phillippe Germain, Bernard's son. Since 2004, Phillippe has restored the fields and caves to their former glory, and planted healthy vines in schist soils on a southern exposure. All the fruit comes from organic plots in Anjou and Coteaux du Layon, yielding ripe Chenin fermented in large neutral casks for 20 days and then aged on the lees for 4 to 6 months for a fuller-bodied, very dry, luxurious wine with baked apple, pear compote, honeysuckle, chamomile, and waxy oxidative notes. There is definitely some skin-contact to account for the deep golden color. Basically, this is a baby Savennières for half the price. Vegan.
