Piedmont is most well known for its red grapes, especially Nebbiolo, but the region also yields some excellent white wines using local Cortese, Moscato, Arneis, in addition to Favorita, Baratuciat, Rossese, Timorasso, and Erbaluce. The latter group is a bit more esoteric; however, Piedmontese white wines are also worth seeking. Erbaluce (Albaluce, Greco Novarese) is a chameleon from the northern Canavese region near Valle d'Aosta. With distinct apple overtones, it yields a range of expressions from linear and high-acid to lush and velvety, as well as crisp sparklers and even sweet Passito when residual sugar is allowed to develop. Look for Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG for an elevated experience.
