Husband and wife team Tom & Marilyn Stolpman dreamed of owning a winery while honeymooning in Napa in the 1980s. Well, dreams come true, and the couple founded Stolpman Vineyards in Ballard Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara County a few years later. With the help of local talent, the Stolpmans have created a multitude of organic wines under the categories of Stolpman Estate, Solorzano Projects, Classics, Combe, and La Cuadrilla.
La Cuadrilla is a shout-out to a group of the hardest-working people in winemaking, migrant workers - especially women. This delicious blend of 60% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 5% each Sangiovese & Mourvedre is not just an empty gesture. Vineyard manager Ruben Solorzano got the go-ahead to employ workers year-round, gave them Cuadras (small vineyard blocks), permanent housing, and trained them in winemaking. This employee-owned project ensures stability and income but also pride. You can taste it in the dark, plummy, minerally, minty, mocha-tinged cuvee. By the way, the woman on this vintage's label is Adelita, the female Mexican revolutionary. If you like the Stolpman vibe, check out Love You Bunches, Combe Trousseau, and Combe Trousseau Pet-Nat.
