Rioja has consistently produces high-quality white wine yet often misses the mark as a mainstream option. Perhaps the choices are either too esoteric or downright basic, until now. Fourth-generation winemaker Cecilio Ramirez de la Piscina figured out how to balance the complex stonefruit waxiness of Macabeo (aka Viura) with the brightness of aromatic Malvasia by planting in limestone-rich soils and vinifying in steel. This vintage's fresh, citrussy, perfumed, bright, and minerally wine makes it a great alternative to the usual Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. Serve with fish, chicken, pintxos, and tapas.
