The Mâconnais region (located in southern Burgundy, just north of Beaujolais and east of Rhone) is a destination for Chardonnay. While Mâcon is known for its most famous village, Pouilly-Fuisse, dozens of other villages offer superb quality and flavor for fair prices. Olivier Giroux, who bought Clos des Rocs about 20 years ago, specializes in Pouilly-Loché across several terroirs on 37 acres of Chardonnay. His Mâcon-Loché is the most affordable of the line-up. It's old-vine fruit grown in limestone & clay on four acres near a forest, processed almost entirely in stainless steel, with a small portion aged in old 500-liter oak barrels. This cool-weather Chard is supremely elegant, showing plenty of citrus, peach, pear, and apple tarte notes.
