Nicolas Delfaud farms just under 10 acres of Gamay and Chardonnay in the commune of Verzé (vair-zay) -- not too far from Fuisse, Lugny, Clesse, and Pierreclos at the northern end of Beaujolais. Although not as well-known as some of the other Mâconnais villages, it's the perfect location for a young winemaker to explore the potential of Verzé. Delfaud's Chardonnay is younger-vine fruit vinified in steel with indigenous yeasts and aged 9 months in tank and neutral barrels. His hand-off approach allows the wine to show the interaction among fruit, yeast, and terroir with lush golden notes of ripe citrus fruit complete with pith & zest attached to a minerally background. We like this with chicken pot pie.
