There are many Puerto Rican rums, but Ron del Barrilito ("rum from the small barrel") is the oldest and among the best. Rum production started in the mid-1800s on the Santa Ana Plantation in Bayamon, and by the late 19th century, the Fernández family were converting brandy-drinking Spaniards to local sugarcane rum. Joaquín Bacardí and a few local investors recently injected much-needed capital into the artisanal brand famous for its small-production 3 Stars, a blend of 8-year average rums aged in old Oloroso Sherry casks. This is a sipping añejo with an amber color and notes of nougat, candied citrus zezt, raisin bread toast, vanilla bean, and a long finish with just a hint of funk. 86 proof.
