Some Rioja have tipped the scales with cumbersome American oak treatment. Daniel Rodriquez and his cousin, Alejandro (formerly of Pingus), use large, second-use, lightly toasted French oak barrels for the delicate fruit harvest from old-vine 1-acre plots on either side of the Ebro River in the Iregua Valley. One is 1500 feet in warmer micro-climate with clay soils, and the other is 2100 feet in stony soils. Panorámico is Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha aged 10 months in 600-liter barrels, yielding an elegant, delicate, complex wine singing with acidity and aromatic fruit like fresh strawberry, raspberry, and cherry. If you tasted blind, you might mistake Panorámico for Burgundy.
