Cabernet Franc dominates the choices in Loire Valley reds, but there are a few sources for excellent Pinot Noir such as Cheverny, Valençay, and Reuilly. Surprisingly, the two villages most famous for Sauvignon Blanc also produce Pinot. There are occasional pricey reds from Sancerre, but we prefer its bracing rosé for the money. Then, there's Philippe Gilbert's Menetou-Salon, which delivers a much better value, an interesting flavor profile, and just a different level of uniqueness among Pinot. Gilbert ferments and ages his estate Pinot in a 9000-liter oval oak cask for a ripe, bright, but superbly mineral-driven palate of juicy red fruit, chalk, and notes of white and pink peppercorns. This low-sulfur, unfiltered wine pairs easily with just about anything.
