Fass #8 is a luxurious Riesling from the village of Ayl (eye-l), about an hour's drive east of Luxembourg. Although the region is often lumped together as Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, we prefer using the individual river designation because the Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) Kupp (coop) vineyard is on the banks of Saar and not the Mosel six miles north, or the Ruwer 4 miles east. Winemaker Florian Lauer makes small amounts of prädikat wine from old ungrafted vines in particular vintages, hence the amazingly ripe fruit in 2023 Barrel #8's smoky, salty, stony, citrus-laden, floral, lush, and lavish off-dry Riesling. It is a shame that something so delicious is so ethereal and fleeting in the glass. It's almost too good to be diluted by food, so have it with small bites like fine cured ham or Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake). 7.5% abv.
