Morellino (aka Sangiovese) is the grape, and Scansano is the medieval town in the Maremma region of coastal southwest Tuscany. The Ciacci family applies the same meticulous standards used on their Brunello di Montalcino property just 25 miles inland to make this blend of Morellino, 10% Malvasia Nera, and 5% Alicante. This wine is fermented in steel and aged for ten months in a mix of new and old oak for deep purple color, dense black currant, tart cherry, and a finish of tobacco and espresso. Try with braises, tomato sauces, meat, fresh sausage, and mushrooms.
Sangiovese, Sanguis Jovis in Latin, or "Blood of Jove" if you want to be Goth, is a grape planted in many parts of Italy and called by many names, but the most well-known wines hail from Tuscany. Look for Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (the town, not the grape), Rosso di Montepulciano, Bolgheri, Montecucco, Carmignano, and Toscano Rosso. The options are endless and worth the effort of trying as many as possible. Mocali has produced Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino on 50 acres since 1990, and now Tiziano Ciacci, his wife Alessandra, and their daughter Pamela also cultivate 50 acres in Maremma. Both are low-yield properties surrounded by olive groves and woodlands for a healthy ecosystem and terroir.
