Kopke might not be the most famous Port house, but it is the oldest. It began in 1636 when Nicolau Kopkë moved from Germany to become Consul General of the Hanseatic League in Portugal; just two years later, Kopkë was shipping wine up to countries along the North and Baltic Seas. By 1781, the company purchased vineyards, and in 1922, they made Quinta de São Luiz their home base. Kopke's specialty is Colheita (kol-hay-tah), some dating back to the 1930s. Unlike other blended Tawny, Colheita is made from a single vintage, then aged in oak for at least 7 years before bottling (Vintage Port ages for about two years before bottling). Think of it as a fully mature, deeply complex wine with Tawny's wood-spiced dried fruit and Vintage Port tannins & acids. Serve cool with desserts and cheeses.
