It is fair to say that Australia does more with Semillon than its motherland of France, where Semillon usually plays second-fiddle to Sauvignon Blanc, unless it's used to make late-harvest Sauternes or Barsac. Australia, especially Hunter Valley just north of Sydney, has found a way to highlight the grape's different personalities through various renditions of young steel-aged, oak-aged, dry, and sweet wines. From the historic Kirtkton Estate, The William is a fresh, steel-vinified, 100% old-vine Semillon with notes of lime, lemon, grapefruit, honey, toast, and stones. If you like Sauvignon Blanc, The William is one to try on a hot day.
