"Gamay from the Ardeche?!" you might wonder. Yes, but it's not like the stuff from Beaujolais. Souhaut preserves old local variants like Gamay Saint-Romain, which is hand-harvested and slow-macerated in whole-clusters with no pump-overs. The wine is aged on fine lees in secondhand oak casks and stainless steel tanks, and bottled unfined/unfiltered with low sulfites. Cloudy ruby in the glass with a distinct Burgundy-ish barnyard nose and flavors of strawberry rhubarb pie, summer watermelon, cherry, raspberry pastilles, herbs, minerals, and northern Rhone smoked meat. It's not cheap, but we fell in love with this Gamay at first sniff. Pair with almost anything requiring a red.
