It's probably been a while since most people have splurged on a Napa Merlot, but this region and grape were all the rage at one time. We think it's time to rediscover this classic varietal before it became overly blousy, sweet, and flabby. Farella is a family vineyard/winery in the Coombsville AVA of Napa Valley, where father-and-son team Frank and Tom Farella grow grapes for high-end wineries but keep 25% of the fruit for their own limited-release wines. This well-aged Merlot achieves a deft balance of tannins and acids supporting plummy dark fruit, berries, sandalwood, earth, and spice. As an elegant wine, Farella pairs well with simple beef roasts, strong cheeses, duck, and pork.
