Since Joel Saurel raised his estate to the highest ranks of the southern Rhône, Saint-Damien VV Gigondas is not readily available. There's a case here and a case there, but when this stellar vintage is gone, we will probably not be getting more -- especially because the price remains well under $40. This old-vine blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre shows dark fruit, exotic spices, garrique, rosemary, and well-worn leather. The 2020 is maturing in time for the holidays, so grab a few bottles for those special winter celebrations. It is also an excellent gift for someone's cellar, where Saint-Damien can age for the next decade or more.
