The vineyard sites around Aloxe-Corton likely date back to the first Roman Emperors. However, the hill of Corton was elevated to legendary status when Charlemagne owned it later in the 8th century. Legends vary as to Charlemagne's involvement with wine production, but it hasn't stopped Corton-Charlemagne from becoming one of the most outstanding Grand Crus for Burgundian Chardonnay. It is expensive and slow to mature, but the rewards are many if you're patient. Rollin Pere & Fils have about an acre of vines across two parcels to make this buttery, minerally, sensuous Chardonnay with notes of peach, honey, roasted nuts, pineapple, ginger, apple, and oak.
