Saint-Estèphe doesn't have the prestige of its neighbor to the south, Pauillac, but it's a much more affordable AOC with some famous Chateaux like Cos d'Estournel. Incidentally, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel also owned Cos Labory (5th Growth) in the 19th century. It has changed hands several times, but the last time was in 2023 when Michel Reybier acquired the "Cos" (hill of pebbles) -- keeping the legacies of both Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel and François Labory in mind. 2016 is a mature blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, aged in 50% new oak. Medium-bodied but dense with a silky, floral palate full of blackberries and fine tannins. It's drinking beautifully now.
