This is one of our favorite historic brands with a history that stretches back to 1810 in West Overton, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Yes, America's first industrial distilleries were in PA; back then, Rye was king. Staring at you from the label is old Abraham Overholt, who learned the trade from his father Heinrich Oberholzer, a Mennonite whose family made "Korn" back in Germany. In 50 years, Overholt went from a few dozen gallons per day to nearly a thousand and beyond until Rye lost market share by the 1960s. Well, Rye is back, and Old Overholt is still one of the best values out there but now made in Kentucky. This liter of peppery, grainy, bracing, dry, caramel-ly whiskey will keep you in Old Fashioneds, Sours, and Manhattans for weeks.
