Duffau Bas-Armagnac is Cognac's country cousin with so much more character and rusticity. Starts with a gorgeous amber/copper/caramel color and a slightly vegetal nose of butterscotch, vanilla, and wood. The palate continues with maple, orange rind, and Christmas pudding before finishing with tannins, dried flowers, sweet Mirabelle plums, and apple butter . It's so nice on a cold winter's night. Before spending $50 on your next bottle of Cognac, try Armagnac. This is one of THE best values in French brandy! 40% Alcohol.
What did farmers do with surplus grapes, juice, or wine back in the day? They could try to sell off the perishable items before they went bad or turn them into valuable, indestructible brandy. But what if they didn't own a still or know how to make spirits? Enter, Prosper Delord, a mobile distiller. These men went from farm to farm with horse-drawn pot stills and made brandy from wine or marc (e.g., grappa) from pomace (leftovers from wine pressings). Distillation was a good investment for everyone concerned, and good brandy only gets better with time. Upon marrying Marie Duffau, Prosper established a permanent company with their son Gaston in 1925. Great grandsons Jérôme and Sylvain are stewards of Armagnacs, some dating back to 1904. Duffau Armagnac is unapologetically old-fashioned, using organic estate-grown Ugni Blanc, Baco, Colombard, Folle Blanche. Their Napoleon is aged a minimum of 10 years (four years longer than required) in Gascon and Limousin oak.
