Orphaned Hyppolite Bonal spent his childhood at the monastery where Carthusian monks created their world-renowned Chartreuse green liqueur. Bonal became a doctor and pharmacist and, in 1865, formulated this herbal remedy out of gentian plants, quina bark (quinine), and herbs from the Chartreuse mountains steeped in fortified wine. Dark, sweet, and moderately bitter, Bonal is served cool with a citrus twist or mixed with cider, lager, rye, and agave spirits. Please note: Bonal will turn any cocktail brown. Substitute Byrrh Grand Quinquina for a reddish hue.
