Located near Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas in southern Rhone, Vacqueyras [vah-kay-rahz] is an area with some of the greatest values. Elevated from a Côtes du Rhône Villages to its own AC in 1990, Vacqueyras is appreciated for its moderately priced yet serious and age-worthy wines. Selection is old-vines Grenache (70%) and Syrah vinified to a hefty 14.5% ABV. Since Vacqueyras and Gigondas are so close together, St.-Damien makes it possible to enjoy its Gigondas-like wild black fruit, earthy funk, toasted herbs, menthol, cocoa, and loads of cedar for about $10 less. The fuller medium-bodied palate is an excellent pairing with lamb, stews, roasts, and even eggplant & tomato dishes. Frankly, this wine is one to buy by the case for cellaring.
