The story behind Taken From Granite is as interesting as the wine itself. First of all, it is more than 20 years old! Imagine a library California Cab selling for under $100?! The other part of the story starts in the 1970s when Gideon Beinstock is working at a remote commune, some say cult, called Renaissance Vineyard. Gideon eventually moved on to create Clos Saron in the late 1990s, but he recently got an opportunity to reclaim some of his old cuvees as Renaissance fell apart. Swan Song is the last vintage on which he consulted, and so here's the last chance to savor a legendary wine from the terraced vineyards of North Yuba on the Sierra Foothills. Think of this as a well-aged Haut-Medoc loaded with tannin and acid to carry it for another 20 years. Full of tertiary notes of mature bramble fruit, sauteed plums, and hints of baking spice, cocoa, and earth, this Cab is best decanted and served with simple preparations of meat, potatoes, and peas in butter.
