Calabria is one of the smaller wine production zones in Italy. The combination of rugged mountain terrain, underappreciated indigenous grapes, and the small population makes it difficult for this region to compete in a country of iconic wines. The Odoardi family is trying to change all that. Although they owned land in Calabria's primary wine-producing provinces, it was in the 1990s that brothers Gregorio and Giovan Battista decided to make wine. The Odoardis soon carved out a niche for the nearly unknown DOCs of Savuto and Scavigna using the humble local grapes. If you're looking for old-school vino, check out this full-bodied well-aged blend of Gaglioppo, Magliocco, Nerello Cappuccio, and Greco Nero aged in French oak. Notes of sun-drenched red fruit, sauvage, black berry, plum, coffee, and dried herbs. Pair with roast red meats.
