A face-to-face visit to any winery is a tricky endeavor. There you are, possibly with the winemaker himself, and the only thing that counts is sales and orders, not compliments and smiles. Luckily, we really liked the line-up in Cutchogue, on Long Island's North Fork. Despite its name, the Field Blend is not a mish-mosh of grapes but an elegant single-estate combination of 75% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. After aging for 14 months in French Oak, the Bordeaux Blend is dry and medium-bodied with notes of cassis, baking spices, vanilla, wood, and dark berries. The people at McCall know how to make the most out of their fruit, terroir, and barrels, so everything shows balance, knowledge, and excellent craftsmanship. Pair this with burgers, lean red meat, and cheeses. BTW: McCall Wines is also a sustainable cattle ranch that sells its beef at the winery and also hosts Burger Nights. Go visit. You won't be disappointed.
