Combining the concepts of "merit" and "heritage," Meritage has existed since 1988 when a group of American vintners formed an association to promote American Bordeaux blends. These winemakers needed a new category because the laws required labeling wine according to the dominating grape, which must compose at least 75%. Consequently, blends that did not fit that model before 1988 were tagged with the catch-all derogatory-sounding term "red table wine." Meritage (rhymes with heritage) sounds much better. Lyeth is a full-bodied blend of 43% Merlot, 26% Petit Verdot, 18% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc with notes of currants, boysenberry, cedar, coffee, chocolate, and vanilla.
