We're big fans of the second labels. They provide a great Bordeaux experience at half the price and are ready to drink much earlier than their premier-label counterparts. In Margaux, 2017 was a tricky vintage, but Kirwan dodged the elements to produce excellent wines. Les Charmes has a higher proportion of Merlot at 57% with 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot aged 16 months in concrete tulip-shape tanks and wood barrels (20% new oak). Les Charmes is at peak drinking now and should mature nicely through 2030 as it develops supple, velvety fruit, blackberry fruit, and cassis with touches of vanilla and toasted wood.
