Founded in the 1970s by vignaiolo (grape grower) Pietro Rocca, La Ca' Nova (la ka-nova) is easing into the fifth generation of family members. Winemakers Marco & Ivan Rocca will continue the tradition of low-intervention winemaking using wild yeasts, Austrian oak, long macerations, and no punch-downs, temperature controls, or filtration. Their steel-fermented Barbera d'Alba is made from 15-year vines and aged 11 months in casks, which yields a 14.5% abv wine showing an earthy medium-bodied palate of cherries, roses, pipe tobacco, menthol, worn leather, exotic spice, and dried herbs. An excellent wine for cool-weather meals.
