Founded in 1992, Pecina is a traditional winery in Rioja Alta with vineyards located on the best sites of San Vicente. Three vineyards are sources for this wine: El Codo, with an average vine age of 30 years; El Llano, with an average vine age of 35 years; and Iscorta, with an average vine age of 60 years. The fruit is destemmed, crushed, and fermented naturally with wild yeast in stainless steel tanks, and then it's aged in old American oak for 2 years with hand-racking every 6 months. The wine is bottled unfined & unfiltered and aged another 2 years before release. This is much longer than most comparably priced Rioja - and after 7 years this Crianza is just peaking. Natural winemaking and very low sulfur in this fuller-bodied, earthy wine showing red berries, purple fruit, tobacco, leather, and preserved cherry. Pair with goat, lamb riblets, roast poultry, and pork chops.
