Was 2021 the best vintage in Burgundy? No. It's the kind of year we call "challenging" in the wine trade, but it's also an opportunity for savvy buyers like us to find some lovely, overlooked, well-priced gems. Philippe Collotte and his daughter Isabelle farm from five low-yielding, chemical-free parcels planted in 1947. Currently, they produce Gevrey-Chambertin, Fixin, and several Marsannay, including lieu-dit "Les Boivins" made of 40+ year Pinot vines planted in limestone Comblanchien soils, fermented with wild yeast, aged in 25% new oak, and bottle unfiltered for an incredibly well-balanced, bright yet earthy pinot with notes of savory herbs, red fruit, sandalwood, and baking spice. Great old school Burgundy at this price is so rare. Get some while it lasts.
