D'Angelo has been producing wine for a century and has made an art form of Aglianico, an ancient grape brought by colonizing Greeks after their arrival in the 7th century BC. The name Aglianico is likely derived from the Greek grape Ellenico, which has adapted nicely in southern Italy and thrives in Campania and Basilicata. Today, Rocco and Erminia D'Angelo grow some of the finest Aglianico in the shadows of the extinct volcano of Vulture. Grapes for Caselle come from 50-year vines and are long-fermented in concrete before aging in old barrels for two years. Caselle is a deep, earthy wine with notes of coffee, chocolate, spice, herbs, stone, and a basket of raw and preserved cherries. "Robust" is the keyword with a pronounced tannic frame.
