If you want to spend less than top dollar on Tempier, there are still a few well-kept secrets from Bandol. We recommend Gros Nore, La Bastide Blanche, and, of course, Château Pradeaux. Pradeaux happens to be one of the oldest family estates, dating back to 1752 when Etienne Portalis inherited the property. It is currently in the hands of Cyrille Portalis, his wife, and two sons, who oversee very old vines near the village of Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer. 2016 is a bold wine made of whole bunches of Mourvedre and 5% Grenache. It is aged four years in wood before release, but be patient as the wine unfurls over the decades. Spicy black fruit, animal notes, chewy tannins, and aromatic blue flowers will blossom after decanting. Great with winter cuisine.
