Finding a soulful wine like Ciclope is always a pleasure, but what else would you expect from a farm that dates back to the Roman era? Located in Panzano in Chianti, Candialle is owned, operated, and preserved by the wife & husband team of Josephin and Jarkko Peränen. Their 30-acre property is organic and regenerative, with native crops and cows to fertilize them. Although 75% of the vines are Sangiovese, Ciclope 2013 is a Bordeaux blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cab Franc, aged 18 months in French Oak barrels. If you didn't notice, Ciclope is over ten years old and will age gracefully for another ten. There were only 333 cases produced; at $23/btl, you should get a case. Dark, earthy notes beneath dense blue fruit with sturdy tannins and high acids pair well with grilled Tuscan steak, porterhouse, skirt steak, and shortribs.
