Sonoma's Old Hill Ranch dates back to 1851 but devolved into a 24-acre bushy junkyard until Otto Teller (Will Bucklin's stepfather) saved it in 1981. The Ancient Field Blend comes from a 12-acre plot planted in 1885. It is mostly Zinfandel co-fermented with two dozen other varietals and aged 22 months in old and new French oak, making Bucklin so much more interesting than the commercial-style syrupy, alcoholic California Zin: It's like a berry patch explosion on the palate but with a deft elegance complemented by spices, smooth tannins, and bright acidity. At half the price of top-grade California Cabernet, we choose this for the next grilled steak.
