Not to be confused with the Balearics (think Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza) in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands are another set of Spanish islands located off the western coast of Africa, 62 miles west of the Sahara Desert in the Atlantic Ocean. Tenerife is the largest and most well-known island, and it's home to the majority of the population, grape vines untouched by phylloxera, and Mount Teide, among the three largest volcanoes in the world.
