Most mezcal originates from Oaxaca in southern Mexico, about 300 miles north of Guatemala. The state of Durango is in northeastern Mexico, about 400 miles south of New Mexico. Considering the change in terroir, mezcalero Urial Simental uses the local agave Durangesis, which is baked in a stone pit, ground by hand, and distilled in hybrid wood and copper stills. This glass-aged joven expresses a wide variety of fruit, low-smoke, vanilla, caramel corn, butter, and a hint of vegetal funk. 90 proof.
