Before you spend triple the price on some ornate bottle from a mega-brand, let us tell you about this Vieille Reserve. Jacky Navarre farms several hectares of vineyards to make small amounts of old-fashioned Cognac in the Cru of Grande Champagne with its clay, limestone, and chalk soils. Technically a Hors d'âge that can exceed aging beyond VSOP, Napolean, XO, and XXO, Vieille Reserve is a blend of brandies dating back to 1965 and spanning the 1970s; it is non-chill filtered, colored, or diluted at 90 proof. It is mature Cognac as it should be, with a deep amber color and notes of pipe tobacco, dried fruit, caramel, and tertiary notes of earth, old leather, nuts, Madeira, cocoa, and wood tannins.
