Slovenia is smack-dab in the middle of wine country, sharing borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia. Located in the picturesque Gorizia hills near Italy, the Stekar winery produces red-skinned Sivi Pinot (aka Pinot Gris/Grigio), which is usually vinified as white wine, but skin-contact Pinot Gris is infinitely more interesting. This is a combination of orange, red, rosé, or white wine wrapped up in a copper-colored style called Ramato. The palate is dense yet lithe with red fruit, stone fruit, orange, and structured tannins. Serve chilled with chicken, red meats, grilled sausage, and vegetables.
