The handsome label doesn't tell you much. In fact, "1000L" makes no sense to most people, so let's start there. It refers to the smallish 1000 liter (264 gallon) "fass" or fuder, a traditional barrel used in the Mosel. For contrast, you can visit the Großes Fass (221,726 liters) at the castle in Heidelberg--it takes up a whole room. Julien Haart makes wine in the Mosel in Piesport with some serious Grand Cru fruit from Goldtröpfchen and Ohligsberg; this wine is basically declassified Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vinified to a dry 11% abv. There is just a hint of sugar in this deep golden, fuller-bodied Riesling loaded with flowers, petrol, baked apples, beeswax, herb tea, and nervy acidity. 1000L is not your usual spicy Asian food Riesling, but better with boiled sausage & cabbage, breaded cutlets and fish, or roasted white proteins.
