Compared to Tuscany and Piedmont, we sell little Sicilian wine, though the far-off island has been making wine for about 6000 years. Frank Cornelissen hasn't been there that long, but he has impacted the Sicilian scene since 2001. His vineyards are in the shadows of Mt. Etna in eastern Sicily, where he grows traditional grapes for estate blends as well as Premier & Grund Cru wines, olives, and complementary crops like buckwheat. Sususcaru Rosso is built on Nerello Mascalese (85%) and supplemented with Nerello Capuccio, Alicante Bouschet, Minnella, and Uva Francesa, fermented with wild yeast and aged in neutral containers. This Rosso is medium-bodied, bright, juicy, chillable, and complex yet gulpable with notes of cranberry, lavender, lava rocks, and currants. We thought of our best food matches and believe it works with Japanese street food (octopus balls), fried calamari, gyros, and thin-crust Westchester/Bronx pizza.
